Kumho BMW Championship COVID-19 Update

Racing track

With COVID-19 hopefully on the wane, we can look forward to a resumption of motor racing in the UK. This means that we finally have the news that our members and attendees have been waiting for – we can now announce our first two races of the season.

The First Races After The Lockdown

The Kumho BMW Championship is now entering its 34th year, making it the longest-running race series for production BMW’s in the UK, having been established in the 1980s. As we are finally beginning to return to normality, we are thrilled that we can start looking forward to the racing season, something that was not looking hopeful a few months back.

The venue for the opening two races in an abbreviated championship is Brands Hatch. Over the weekend, two races will be taking place with competitors split through 4 classes. These classes will be defined on a power/weight ratio catering for any model BMW from virtually standard to “out and out” full race versions. Due to the points scoring system, this means that the overall champion can come from any Class.

The 2020 Competitors

The championship looks to be wide open with last year’s all-conquering champion, Garrie Whittaker, moving onto new challenges. This leaves the field open to a number of drivers, both seasoned campaigners and fired-up newcomers. Drivers to look out for include:

An influx of drivers new to the championship should make for some interesting racing throughout the field. There will be circuits ranging from the fast and flat Snetterton through the three-dimensional hilly circuits such as Oulton Park and Brands Hatch. Not to mention the narrow Mallory Park with our last round being at Thruxton. The drivers at the sharp end of the field could well differ from circuit to circuit, only time will tell!
