Finale for Kumho championship at Thruxton

Thruxton circuit in Hampshire provided the BMW Kumho tyres championship with the final 2 rounds of the 2010 campaign. Could Des Thresh hold his nerve and take the title or would Stephan Lanfermeijer wrestle it from him.

A very heavy overnight frost greeted the drivers who had entered the races and qualifying all on one day. The BMW'S took to the track late on the Sunday morning after the obligatory church break held at the circuit. A total of 23 cars were on track which consisted of 12 class A cars,5 class B cars and 6 class D cars.Thruxton is the fastest circuit in the country and is 2.35 miles long and should suit the fast cars. The session lasted 15 minutes and there was even a unique moment when Garrie Whittaker spun at the chicane which is very rare to see. When the allotted time had elapsed it was business as usual at the front of the grid with Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3) leading the pack ahead of Tom Webb (E36).Whittaker's time of 1:22.573 gave him an average speed of over 102mph.The fastest class B car was that of Stuart Laws (E36 M3) closely followed by championship leader Thresh (E36 M3).The class D leaders were Lanfermeijer (318is) ahead of Paul Bellamy (319is).

Sunday afternoon saw the 1st of the 2 twenty minute races for the drivers. The sun was now shining and there was no chance of any rain making for a good fast race. A blistering start by Whittaker and he was soon pulling away from the chasing pack led by James Webb (E36) and David Kempton (E36 M3).Laws was leading Thresh in the class B race and Bellamy was just ahead of Lanfermeijer further down the field for class D honours. Whittaker was setting such a fast pace that on lap 3 he shattered the lap record with a time of 1:22.964 and he was then able to sit back on his lead and let the others behind him squabble for the race places. Thresh was now driving well and had moved ahead of Laws so another class win was looking good.Bellamy and Lanfermeijer were having there own battle for the class D win. The race took the chequered flag and Whittaker had made it 5 wins on the trot with Webb and Kempton taking the next places. Thresh had won class B ahead of Mark Astall (compact) with Laws in 3rd place.Bellamy had won class D ahead of Lanfermeijer with John Brabbin (318is) 3rd.Only 2 cars failed to finish the race and 1 of them was the outgoing champion James Card (E30 M3).Whittaker had completed 14 laps in the race in a time of 19:41.109.

Later in the afternoon the cars came back out for the final race of a long season for the BMW drivers. The race got underway and this time it was Tom Webb who took the lead from Kempton with Whittaker down in 3rd place. On the 3rd lap of the race Whittaker had just moved into 2nd place ahead of Kempton when Astall came through the final chicane and damaged the underneath of his car which resulted in the race being red flagged due to safety issues. The cars went back to the grid minus Astalls car and the race was shortened to 15 minutes duration due to the time taken by track officials making the track safe to race on. Another good start by Webb who went into the lead again from Kempton and Whittaker in close pursuit. Thresh was safely leading the class B race and looked to be on track to take the title. Again Bellamy and Lanfermeijer were in a tussle for the class D win. With only a few laps to go Whittaker moved menacingly into 2nd place ahead of Kempton. As hard as Whittaker tried he just couldn’t quite get past Webb who took the final chequered flag of the season with Kempton in 3rd position. Thresh had come safely home to win class B ahead of Laws and Adrian Gilbert (E36 M3).Bellamy had made it another win double with Lanfermeijer 2nd ahead of Ralph Kirk (318is).

As the cars made there way back to the paddock it looked as if Thresh was the new champion but there would be some controversy to be had. Because of the red flag incident and the number of class B cars that had restarted the 2nd race this would determine how many points would be awarded to Thresh so Lanfermeijer asked for a clarification of the rules. The officials from BARC who run the championship went away and studied the rules and it was confirmed within a couple of days that Thresh was the new title holder.

After a long hard season there were class champions for Whittaker in class A with Thresh in class B and Lanfermeijer in class D.A total of 37 drivers took part in the 2010 season and it is congratulations to Thresh.
