The latest rounds of the 2011 Kumho tyres BMW championship were held at Snetterton park in Norfolk on the new configuration called the 300 and this was the 1st time for many of the drivers to see and race the new layout.
Late Saturday morning 21 cars took to the track for a 15 minute qualifying session which comprised of on 3 class A cars and 5 class B cars 1 in class C and a massive 12 in class D. On a dry track times were quick and not surprisingly it was Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3) who was fastest with a time of 2:06.384 which was 3, 115 seconds quicker than Ian Crisp (E36 M3 EVO) with Stephen Pearson (M3) 3rd. The fastest class B car was that of Rodger Card (E30 M3) ahead of Mark Smith (E36 M3). Peter Miller was the lone class C car and was13th overall. The top placed class D car in 9th place was Richard Bacon (E36 318i) ahead of Paul Bellamy (318 is). The cars all then went back to the garages as that was the end of the days work for them wit the 2 races being held the following day.
Sunday morning saw the BMW'S come out for there 1st race of the day. Twenty minutes of racing lie ahead. There were also 2 more cars on the grid who had turned up overnight Colin Wells (M3) and Colin Whitmore (M3) and these would start at the back of the grid. After the green flag parade lap all of the cars waited for the lights to go out to signal the start of the race and when they did it was Whittaker very fast away with the chasing pack following. All of the cars made it safely around the first tight hairpin and the race was well and truly underway. Wells and Whitmore were already passing some of the slower cars ahead of them but it was Whittaker who was beginning to pull away from Crisp with Pearson safely in 3rd. Crd and Smith were having a duel in class B with Bellamy and Bacon the leading class D cars. Within a few laps Whittaker was now well out of sight and was building up a huge lead. Wells was overtaking many cars and was now up to 4th position. Whitmore unfortunately pulled off with mechanical trouble and took no further part in the race. The biggest battle on track was all of the class D cars and there was only a handful of seconds covering the 1st few cars in the race. The race ended and Whittaker had completed 10 laps to record his 3rd win in a row this season and had won by 26.918 seconds from Crisp with Wells coming home 3rd. Smith took the class B honours ahead of Card with Stuart Laws ( E36 M3) 3rd. Peter Miller finished in 15th overall. The class D win went to Bellamy ahead of Bacon with Mathew Fielding ( 318 coupe) in 3rd.
Fastest laps for Whittaker class A 2:06.381, Smith class B 2:14.321, Miller class C 2:22.029 and Bellamy class D 2:25.273 which were all new lap records.
Late in the afternoon the cars came out for race 2. Another 20 minute race with Wells up near the front looking to give Whittaker a race for the win. The race got underway and once again it was a blistering start for Whittaker and it looked like nothing could stop him gaining win number 4. Wells had problems and was trailing toward the back of the race leaving Crisp and Pearson to set about catching the very fast Whittaker. Smith and Card were swapping places lap after lap in class B with Bellamy and Bacon being joined by Karl Skitt (318 compact) in class D. The race was giving good entertainment to the people watching with lots of overtaking on the new corners when going into Murrays corner Ralph Kirk (318 is) spun and was nearly hit by Darren Fielding (318 compact) but the bad news was that the stranded car of Kirk was deemed to be in a dangerous place on the side of the track so the race red flagged and stopped. Because 7 laps had been raced the race would not be restarted meaning that Whittaker was declared the race winner for his 4th win in a row. Whittaker had won by a margin of 13.897 seconds from Crisp with Pearson in 3rd.Card took the class B win ahead of Smith and Laws. Another finish for Miller in class C. Bellamy took the class D honours ahead of Bacon and Skitt. Fastest laps for Whittaker,Smith,Miller and Bellamy but none of them broke there own lap records set earlier in the day.
The championship will now move onto Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire for 1 race over 30 minutes on Monday 2nd may with Whittaker and Bellamy the joint leaders of the championship with maximum points ahead of Smith and Card. So far this season there has been a total of 27 different drivers competing.
