Pembrey circuit in South Wales was to be a very busy weekend for the drivers competing in the latest rounds of the 2011 BMW Kumho tyres championship with qualifying and 1 race on the Saturday and 2 races the following day.
After early morning rain it was a damp and slippery track that the drivers found when they went out for the 20 minute qualifying sesion. There were 25 cars on track for this busy session comprising 4 class A cars,4 class B,3 Class C,10 class D and 3 invitational class cars. For most of the session it was Colin Wells (M3) setting the pace in his invitational car and the whole order was looking very different than normal due to the track conditions. With only a few seconds of the session left Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3) put in the fastest lap of the session to take pole position from Wells.Whittaker's time was 1:09.602 with Wells on 1:09.747.Stephen Pearson (M3) was 3rd with Richard Marsh (E36 M3) 4th heading class B.In 5th place was a class C car of Darren Fielding (318 compact). The top placed class D car was Richard Bacon ( 318is) in 7th place overall.
Whittaker's time represented an average speed of 75.30 mph for the circuit measuring 1.45 miles.
Race 1 got underway and all races would be over a 20 minute duration and now the track was virtually dry after the sun had decided to shine. The race got underway and it was a normal start for Whittaker who headed Wells and the rest of the pack of cars into the 1st tight corner of the circuit. There was contact between Darren Fielding and Richard Marsh with the Marsh car sustaining heavy damage to the back of the car.The rest of the cars made it through the corner and the race was under way.Within a couple of laps Whittaker and Wells started to pull away from the chasing pack.Bacon and Paul Bellamy (318is) were having a titanic battle further down the order. Stuart Laws (E36 M3) and Rodger Card (E30 M3) were also in a tight race order. After 19 laps the race finally finished with another win for Whittaker who had managed to hold of Wells all race long.Pearson took 3rd place after a lonely drive on his own.Laws took the class B win just ahead of Card. The class C win went to Simon Hudson (E30) with 7th place overall. Bellamy took the class D win ahead of Robert Salisbury (318 is).Whittaker told the reported in the pit lane 'this was his hardest race of the year as Wells never gave up'
Fastest laps for Whittaker class A,March class B,Hudson class C ,Bellamy class D and Wells in the invitational class.Whittakers time of 1:02.760 was a new lap record with an average speed of 83.51mph.
Race 2 was early the next morning.A similar start for the 2 cars on the front of the grid but it was Whittaker just holding off Wells going into the first corner of the race. This time all of the cars got through the corner without any damage of contact.Once again it was Whittaker pulling away from Wells.Laws was having a good race with Marsh.Further down the race order it was Salisbury and Bacon leading class D.With only a few minutes of the race left going into a fast corner called Honda Whittaker his some oil left by another car and this slip let Wells through to lead the race.Wells took the race win from Whittaker with Pearson once again alone in 3rd place.Laws took class B from Marsh and Hudson taking class C.Bellamy took class D ahead of Salisbury
