Oulton Park in Cheshire saw the latest rounds of the BMW Kumho tyres championship and it proved to be a turning point in this years championship.
Thirty cars had went on track for practice comprising 6 class A,4 class B,2 classC,13 class D and 5 in the invitational class including a return to the championship by Thomas Houlbrook (E36 M3).The track used was the shorter Fosters circuit which cuts out the long section going around the lake at the far end of the circuit.
At the end of qualifying it was Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3) heading the times with 1:06.378 with David Kempton (E36 M3) 1:06.905 in 2nd and Thomas Knight (E36 M3) 1:07.017 in 3rd.The tope placed class B car was that of Rodger Card (E30 M3) 1:10.120 in 6th.Simon Hudson (E30) 1:11.412 was the quickest of the 2 class C cars on track. Top placed class D car was Mathew Fielding (318 coupe) 1:12.988 on the grid in 11th.Whittakers time represented an average speed of 89.70 mph for the track measuring 1.65 miles in length.
Race 1 got underway later in the day and Whittaker making his now normal blistering start pulled away from Kempton and Knight. Further down the order R Car and Stuart Laws (E36 M3) were having a battle for class B honours. The big race was involving all of the class D cars further down the race order and with Karl Skitt (318 compact) spinning round championship leader Paul Bellamy (318is) this put Bellamy under pressure to get back in the race and finish as high as possible. The race took the chequered flag after the allotted 20 minute period and it was another win for Whittaker ahead of Kempton and Knight.R Card came home 6th overall to take the class B win just ahead of Laws. Hudson was 9th for another class C win.M Fielding in 10th headed home Darren Fielding (318 compact) for the class D win with Bellamy finishing down in 16th place overall.
Race 2 got underway without Kempton who managed to put his car against a post in the holding area which resulted in damaging the car so took no part in the race. This left Whittaker alone on the front of the grid.Another 20 minutes was to be the race distance and it was once again Knight taking the challenge to Whittaker with Stephen Pearson (M3) in the mix at the front of the race.Mark Smith (E36 M3)was this time leading class B around the track ahead of R card.Bellamy and D Fielding were having a great race down in class D when going down the hill into cascades Fielding went on the grass behind Bellamy which then resulted in Fielding coming back on the track out of control at high speed and going straight into Bellamy who was going around knickerbrook and both cars went into the armco barriers at high speed and the race was red flagged and stopped for safety reasons.
The race was not then restarted so this meant that Whittaker claimed another race win double ahead of Knight and Pearson.Smith took class B and Hudson took class C honours.Class D was won by Skitt ahead of M Fielding.
The crash which took both Fielding and Bellamy out had a big impact on this years championship as it was the 1st time this season that Bellamy never finished a race.
The cars will not head off to Pembrey in South Wales with Whittaker now leading the championship by 11 points and he knows that with 3 races at Pembrey the championship is now within his grasp having already secured the class A crown.R Cars is leading class B and Hudson leading class C.Bellamy is still leading class D
