Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire saw the return of the Kumho BMW championship to the circuit for the 1st time in over 10 years and could well prove to be the turning point in the 2011 championship. This meeting was also unusual in the fact that instead of just the normal 2 races in 1 day the classes were split up into A,B,C+I then D all on it's own and then 2 races for each. Both classes would have 1 qualifying session and grid 2 would be the result of race 1.
Class D qualifying.
A glorious sunny morning greeted the 1st cars on track for qualifying which was the class D cars. A total of 11 cars were out in the session.Cadwell park with it's undulating track was something the drivers had to get used to very quickly but it was championship co-leader Paul Bellamy (318 is) who was posting the quickest times in the session. The session ended with Bellamy on top with a time of 1:46.684 ahead of Karl Skitt ( 318 compact) 1:48.115 with Richard Bacon ( E36 318i) 3rd with 1:48.551.The time of Bellamy represented an average speed of 73.79 mph for the 2.187 mile circuit. Douglas Simmen ( 318 is) & John Jones ( 318 is) were having mechanical issues and were at the back of the grid being over 11 seconds behind.
Class A,B,C+I qualifying.
Four class A cars and four class B cars with 1 class C car took to the track for there qualifying session. It was very obvious that championship co-leader Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3) meant business as he only covered 6 laps of the circuit in qualifying and his fastest time of 1:36.563 was 6.79 seconds quicker than the 2nd car of James Card (E46 M3).Stuart Laws (E36 M3) 1:44.276 was 3rd quickest and this was the 1st class B car with another 1 right behind driven by Rodger Card (E30 M3).Stephen Pearson (M3) & Colin Whitmore (M3) were the next class A cars.Peter Miller (E36 328i ) was the lone class C car with a time of 1:50.082.Adrian Gilbert suffered an engine issue and only completed 2 laps in qualifying and would take no more part in the days proceedings. Whittaker's time gave him an average speed of 81.53 mph.
Class D race 1
The 1st race for the class D cars was held later in the morning. By now it was getting dark and gloomy but no rain had fallen. Bellamy and Skitt made good starts to the 20 minute race. By the time the 1st lap of the circuit had been taken Bellamy was opening up a good lead on the chasing pack which was being led by Skitt and Bacon. After only a couple more laps it was looking very good for Bellamy and the real tussle was between Skitt and bacon. Mathew Fielding ( 318 coupe) was having a good race with Darren Fielding ( 318 compact).John Brabbin (318) was ahead of James Ford (E36 318ti) and Philip Grayson (318is). Jones & Simmen were losing time on the leaders and were soon a lap adrift. After 7 laps Robert Salisbury (318si) pulled into the pits with a mechanical problem.Bellamy was out in front but his lead was going down and at 1 point looked as if Skitt or Bacon could catch him. Bacon was now in 2nd place but on the last lap of the race going into the famous mountain section of the circuit he spun leaving the way for Skitt to take 2nd place behind Bellamy. Bacon recovered to take 3rd place. This win was number 10 out of 10 for Bellamy.12 laps had been completed by the leading cars in the allotted time. Darren Fielding had the fastest lap of 1:46.783.
Class A,B,C+I race 1
Whittaker took up his pole position place alongside J Card and when the lights went out Whittaker was very quickly away which by now is the norm. By the end of the 1st lap Whittaker was already well out of site with the chasing pack being led by J card, Pearson and Whitmore. Down in class B it was R Card racing with Evelyne Buanic ( E36 M3) Miller was the only class C car running and was adrift at the back of the race order. Whittaker was driving very well and on lap 7 of the race had his fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:37.083. Card & Pearson were having the best battle on track with Card just having the advantage as the laps were going by. Laws pulled out of the race on lap 5 with his car sounding very rough. Whiitaker took the chequered flag for his 10th win on the trot this season and had won by a margin of 1:03.705. Card took 2nd place ahead of Pearson and whitmore. R Card took the class B honours and Miller also finished to take the class C win. Fastest laps for R Card in class D and obviously Miller in class C.
Class D race 2.
Rain had been falling steadily when the class D cars came out for there 2nd race of the day. They were given to laps to see where the standing water was on the track. When the race got underway it was Skitt who took the lead from Bellamy. Bellamy took over the lead on the 2nd lap of the race. D Fielding & Salisbury and bacon were having a fantastic race for 3rd position on the now very damp tricky circuit. Suddenly as Bellamy headed into the mountain section he went into a sideways spin and was very lucky not to be taken out by Skitt who was very close behind him. Bellamy was then beached on the side of the grass at the top of the mountain and wasn’t going anywhere until the trackside Marshalls went to his assistance and managed to push him back onto the track and back into the race. Bellamy was now a long was down the race order. Skitt was now leading the race and was out on his own. After 10 wet laps the race ended with Skitt taking his 1st win of the season. D Fielding just managed to take 2nd place ahead of Salisbury. Bacon came home ahead of M Fielding. Grayson took 6th place just ahead of Bellamy who saw his 100% win rate dissapear. Ford led Brabbin,Jones and Simmen home. Bacon had the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:59.989 which was over 13 seconds slower than the fastest lap in race 1 due to the poor conditions.
Class A,B,C+I race 2
By the time this race started the track was now very wet with a lot of standing water as well. Again all of the cars were given 2 laps to see the conditions for themselves. Another blistering start from Whittaker and it looked as if his car was on rails as he led the cars away on the 1st lap of the race. All of the chasing pack were taking it very steadily and it was Whitmore who was leading the chase with Miller right behind him. Pearson stopped on lap 1 but managed to get his car going and rejoin the race but was a long way behind. The 2 Cards were having a good battle in there separate classes. Whittaker was a long way ahead and the commentator kept mentioning if he could win he would be leading the championship….how wrong he was. Whittaker took his 11th championship win out of 11 this season and won by a margin of nearly 2 minutes from Whitmore in 2nd . Miller took 3rd position with J Card beating R card home. Buanic took 6th place but as she went through the winning line went into a high speed collision with the trackside barriers which caused some bad damage to her car. Pearson came home in 7th and was the last car running. Fastest laps for Whittaker, Buanic and Miller.
Such is the way that the championship is structured that with Whittaker having not been beaten this season due to the numbers of cars taking part in class A of the championship he did not take maximum points from the 2 wins at Cadwell park leaving Bellamy out on his own with an 8 point lead with Mathew Fielding in 3rd place. How ironic it could be this season that Whittaker could well remain unbeaten and take every race win but this would not be enough to take the 2011 title.
The next rounds of the championship are at Rockingham in early July with qualifying and 2 races all on 1 day.
