A new season for the 2010 Kumho tyres championship started at Brands Hatch in Kent and saw some established drivers competing in new cars. Garrie Whittaker,Des Thresh, Stuart Laws and Evelyne Buanic had all moved from E30 cars to E36 machines.
There were 27 cars that took to the track for qualifying held in glorious sunshine which was made up of 15 class A cars,6 class B cars and 6 class D cars. In class D was a return to the class of Stephan Lanfermeijer who was runner up in the championship in the same car 2 years ago.
The cars were competing on the Indy circuit which measures 1.19 miles in length and features some of the most famous corners in the world including paddock hill bend with its large gravel trap waiting for drivers who drive off of the racing line. At the end of the session Piers Ross (E36 M3 EVO) was the fastest person on track with a time of 52.517 seconds which was 0.199 seconds quicker than Garrie Whittaker (E36 M3).The fastest class B car was Des Thresh (E36 M3) ahead of Rodger Card (E30 M3).Stephan Lanfermeijer (e36 318is) was quickest in class D ahead of Paul Bellamy (318is).
Race 1 of the weekend was held later in the day. The races would be over a duration of 20 minutes in total. A good clean start by all of the cars which made it safely through paddock hill bend and it was Piers Ross who was soon leading the race going around the 1st lap. As the race settled down Piers started pulling away but then Whittaker got the bit between his teeth and put up the fastest lap of the race. On lap 7 David Kempton (E36 M3) had to retire with a differential problem. Whittaker was closing the gap between himself and Piers at the front when his car suddenly started to slow a fan belt had come off of his stricken car meaning another retirement. Richard Mallinson (E36 M3) himself a past retired on lap 16 due to a major water problem with his car. Further down the field Thresh was having a titanic tussle with Card and they were lucky not to have a collision. Ross eventually took the chequered flag ahead of Thomas Houlbrook (E36 M3) with James Webb (e36) in 3rd. James Webb was the class A winner as both Piers and Thomas are running in the invitational class and do not gain championship points. Ian Munns (E36) Tom Webb (E36) took the next places in class A. Thresh took the class B honours ahead of Card and Stuart Laws (E36 M3).Stephan Lanfermeijer took the class D win ahead of Paul Bellamy and Sean Foley (318is).Fastest laps for Whittaker in class A, Thresh in class B and Lanfermeijer in class D.
The 2nd race of the weekend was on the Sunday afternoon and would be over another 20 minute duration. This was an action packed race with Ross once again pulling away from the chasing cars behind him. Having to start towards the back of the grid didn't seem to be an issue for Whittaker as he was moving menacingly through the field and was moving towards the front of the race. In the other class battles it was similar to the previous day with Thresh and Card in class B and Lanfermeijer and Bellamy in class D. Mallinson once again retired after 7 laps making for a miserable weekend for him as well as Kempton. Ross took another race win ahead of Houlbrook for a winning double. The class results were James Webb ahead of Whittaker and Ian Crisp (E36 M3 EVO) in class A. Thresh took class B ahead of Card and Laws.Lanfermeijer took class D ahead of Bellamy and John Brabbin (318).
Fastest laps for James Webb class A, Card class B and Lanfermeijer class D.
The next rounds of the championship will be at Silverstone in early May.
The championship is after 2 races a 3 way tie for the lead between Webb,Thresh and Lanfermeijer.
