    Wells double on new circuit


    The international circuit at Silverstone provided the latest test for the drivers in the Kumho tyres BMW championship 2014.This was also the 1st race meeting this season where all of the classes would race together due to the meeting being shown on Motors TV racing channel  with Saturdays race getting live coverage and a very busy timetable for the whole meeting.This was also the 1st time for the championship on the international circuit which runs out of the Silverstone wing.

    Qualifying took place early on Saturday morning with 23 cars taking to the track comprising of 7 in class A,8 in class B,3 in class C, and 5 in class D.What also greeted the drivers was not only a new circuit to get to grips with but also torrential rain with very poor visibility which would make qualifying treacherous.

    At the end of the 20 minute qualifying session it was Tom Wrigley (E36 M3) leading the way ahead of Mike Hibbert (E36 M3) with Colin Wells ( (M3 CSL) next. In 4th place was Paul Travers ( 328 I Coupe ) fastest for class C just ahead of  Dave Heasman (328i Saloon)The fastest class B car on track was Robert Salisbury (M3) in 8th with David Griffin (E36 M3) in 10th.Class D was headed by Greg Marking (318is) in 12th ahead of James Ford (318 ti) in 14th place.The time for Wrigley was 1:34.839 giving him an average speed of 70.25 for the 1.85 mile circuit.

    When race 1 which was to be the full televised race came round later in the day the sun was not shining and the track was virtually dry as well.A rolling start saw all  of the cars up and running and with the grid order from the wet qualifying there was going to be a lot of overtaking all down the race order.Wrigley led Hibbert & Wells into the 1st corner and the huge pack of cars followed. Salisbury was leading the way in class B with Heasman leading class C.Ford & Marking were having there normal bumper to bumper duel for class D honours.Wells took the lead over from Wrigley and was then never headed as he took another race victory with Wrigley 2nd & Colin Whitmore (E36 M3) in 3rd position.Salisbury took the class B win ahead of Dominec Surdi (M3)Class C went to Heasman ahead of Alan Thompson (E36 328i)The class D race win went the way of Marking ahead of Ford.

    Fastest race laps to Wells (1:14.542) class A & Salisbury (1:17.626) with Heasman (1:20.317) and Marking (1:24.298) all being new lap records and Wells was over 20 seconds faster than the pole time in qualifying such was the changing conditions.

    Sunday saw the pack of BMW'S come out for race 2 of the weekend for them.This time it was Wells taking the race lead from Wrigley and this lead changed hands a couple of times over the 1st  few laps of the race until Wells got the better of Wrigley and pulled away from him.Surdi & Salisbury were having a good race for the class B win.Heasman & Travers were driving well down in the class C battle with Marking & Ford battling in class D.After 16 laps of the circuit it was Wells making it a race win double ahead of Wrigley with James Card (E46 M3) in 3rd.Salisburry took the class B win ahead of Surdi.Heasman took the Class C honours ahead of Travers with Marking also taking another class win in class D ahead of Ford.

    Fastest race laps for Wells &Salisbury & Travers (1:19.782) & Marking (1:24.030) with Travers and Marking having new lap records.

    With all of the drivers racing on a new configuration and the foul weather conditions thrown at them it was a testament to the how well they took all that was thrown at them.
